Educational Themes

The Women’s & Gender Center has three focus areas and educational themes: empowerment and leadership development, gender identity and sexual orientation, and sexual violence awareness and prevention.

Empowerment & Leadership Development

  • Students laughing in a classroom

We host programming that aims to empower women and celebrate their accomplishments. We help women on our campus nurture confidence, bravery, and self advocacy skills. We take pride in organizing a variety of events that contribute to students’ academic, personal, and professional success, with a focus on those who stand to gain the most from such support.

Examples of Signature Empowerment & Leadership Development Programming:

    • Women’s History Month programming
    • International Women’s Day Event
    • Women’s Empowerment Initiative

Celebrating Diversity in Gender & Sexual Orientation

  • Group of students celebrating pride and posing with flags and face paint

Our mission includes raising awareness about crucial topics like gender pronouns, sexual orientation, and intersectionality within the community. Serving as an inclusive and comforting space for Champlain’s LGBTQ+ community, the Center provides a platform for discussions and support. Our student-led LGBTQ+ group, Include+, convenes biweekly to connect and create community.

Examples of Signature Gender & Sexual Orientation Programming:

    • National Coming Out Day & Coming Out Monologues
    • Lavender Graduation
    • Safe Zone Training
    • Trans Day of Remembrance
    • Crosswalk painting

Sexual Violence Awareness & Prevention

  • three white luminary bags sit on a table with messages about consent and what it means to be a survivor

Collaborating with campus partners, the Women’s & Gender Center is committed to educating the community about bystander intervention, sexual violence prevention, and survivor resources. Our focus is on delivering progressive and fitting educational programs that equip students with tools and knowledge to help prevent sexual violence and understand the resources available for reporting an incident and/or accessing support services.

Examples of Signature Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Programming:

    • Sexual Violence Awareness Month
    • Clothesline Project
    • Consent 101
    • Shedding Light on Sexual Violence Luminaria
    • White Ribbon Campaign
