Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities. This includes discrimination against those who may be pregnant or experiencing related conditions.
Pregnancy or related conditions include the following:
- Pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, or lactation;
- Medical conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, or lactation; or
- Recovery from pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, lactation, or their related medical conditions.
Students can request an adjustment through the Title IX Office for pregnancy or related conditions. Students may also request academic accommodations for a condition related to pregnancy through the Office of Accessibility.
Types of Adjustments
- Seating arrangement
- Breaks throughout class on an as-needed basis
- Rescheduling of quizzes, tests, or exams
- Excused absences for pregnant students or those experiencing related conditions
- Submitting late work
- Providing an alternative to missed work
To request adjustments, please contact the Title IX Coordinator or the Deputy Coordinators.
Reasonable Modifications
For Students
Students, or a person who has a legal right to act on behalf of the student, may request reasonable modifications to College programs or activities as a result of pregnancy or related conditions. Requests should be made by contacting the Title IX Coordinator.
For Employees
Employees may request reasonable accommodations as a result of pregnancy or related conditions. Requests should be made by contacting the Title IX Coordinator.
In working with employees requesting reasonable accommodations, the Title IX Coordinator may work with the People Center in order to provide reasonable accommodations as a result of pregnancy or related conditions.

What should employees do?
In supporting students who may be experiencing pregnancy or related conditions, Champlain College employees shall provide:
- the contact info for the Title IX Coordinator
- how the Title IX Coordinator can help
Non-Confidential Employees may also report this information to the Title IX Coordinator to seek support for the impacted individual.
Making a Report
Reports can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via email, phone, in person, or the online reporting form.
The Title IX Coordinator can help…
By coordinating specific actions to prevent sex discrimination and ensure equal access to College programs and activities, including:
- Reasonable modifications of College policies and procedures.
- Access to any separate portion of the College’s program or activity.
- A voluntary leave from Champlain.
- Availability of a lactation space.
