Health Insurance
Health insurance offered through Champlain is available to our international students and visitors. Learn more about the coverage, and how to opt in/out.
Champlain College has partnered with Wellfleet Group LLC for student health insurance coverage.
All degree-seeking and non-degree international students are automatically billed for the College’s institutional insurance.
J-1 exchange scholars can opt into the plan.
International students and exchange visitors can opt out of this insurance IF they can prove to the Director, OISS through documentation that they have coverage that meets or exceeds the new J-1 SubPart A minimum requirements, which are as follows:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- In case of death, repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
- In case of serious illness or injury, payment of expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the Exchange Visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
- A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
AND must…
- Not unreasonably exclude coverage for the perils inherent to the activities of the exchange program in which the exchange visitor participates.
- Be underwritten by an insurance corporation having a “AY” or above (A.M. Best, McGraw Hill Financial/Standard & Poor’s Claims-paying Ability, Fitch Ratings, Inc.), a “B+” or above (Weiss Research Inc.), an “A3” or above (Moody’s Investor Services Inc.), or some other rating deemed by the Department of State, or
- Be backed by the full faith and credit of the exchange visitor’s national government, or
- Be part of a health benefits program offered on a group basis to all employees or enrolled students by a designated sponsor, or
- Be offered/underwritten by a federally qualified Health Maintenance Organization or eligible Competitive Medical Plan as determined by the Centers of Medicare or Medicaid Services of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Please be aware that accompanying spouses and dependents (children under the age of 21) are required to be covered by insurance in the same amounts as detailed above.
Many international students and exchange visitors at Champlain have opted to enroll in plans offered by International Student Insurance.
