Orientation Leader

Description

Give that warm Champlain welcome to our new students!

Orientation Leaders (OLs) are student leaders who play a HUGE role in welcoming the incoming class to Champlain during New Student Orientation in August. Help build a sense of community and belonging among first-year and transfer students. OLs lead events such as the Lake Champlain boat cruise, bowling party, and fun in the Student Life Center, featuring The Grind. OLs also head smaller orientation groups to guide students through the first days of college. Serve as an approachable resource and provide information to new students about campus and student life, where to find campus resources, and where to go for orientation events. Celebrate the beginning of a new chapter with our new Champlain College students!

There is also an opportunity for OLs to welcome new students during January Orientation.

Orientation Leaders are paid and selected through an application and interview process. Applications open at the beginning of spring semester. Be on the lookout for information!

Peer Coach

Description

Become a mentor for your fellow students!

Peer Coaches are student mentors who represent the InSight Program and the Career Collaborative. They facilitate workshops, support signature events, and host office hours to increase student awareness and engagement in the InSight program. Peer Coaches have the opportunity to participate in the development of the InSight program, through brainstorming initiatives and resources that further prepare Champlain students for a successful transition from academic to professional life.

We encourage all motivated students to apply to become a Peer Coach! Recruitment starts in the spring semester for the following academic year. Keep an eye out for emails from your Career Coach, or talk to a current Peer Coach for recruitment information. Available positions will be posted on Handshake, so make sure to check regularly for opportunities.

There are three types of Peer Coaches:

Personal Finance Peer Coaches: These coaches focus on topics such as credit, salary negotiation, budgeting, cost of living analysis, investments and student loan repayment strategies. They participate in dedicated trainings to become experts in these areas so they can empower other students to make informed financial decisions.

Career Peer Coaches: These coaches work closely with the professional staff in the Career Collaborative and represent all academic divisions. They host daily drop-in hours at the Garden House and assist students with Career InSight milestone completion and the on-campus job search process.

Wellbeing Peer Coaches: These coaches have a dual role, supporting the wellbeing theme of InSight as well as Dare to CARE campus events and activities. Both responsibilities involve meaningful collaboration with a variety of campus partners and help us build a strong culture of wellbeing on campus.

All Peer Coaches are student leaders on campus and receive additional training in leadership skill development.

Phi Alpha Honor Society

Description

Phi Alpha Social Work Honors Society is a nationally affiliated honor society. We host academic scholarship and social work activities centered on social justice and humanitarian values. Students in this group get to engage in on campus and community-based activities that support scholarly recognition and professional readiness. We support a culture of achievement and inclusion in everything we do.

Resident Advisor

Description

The Resident Advisor (RA) position is an exciting opportunity for highly motivated, highly qualified Champlain College students. As an RA, you’ll develop leadership, problem-solving, conflict management, and communication skills while helping fellow students thrive. From planning activities with current residents that encourage making connections and building teamwork to monitoring the halls, you will help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for your residents.

Resident Advisors are compensated with a single room in the residence hall to which they are assigned and a stipend of $1,000 per semester paid in bi-weekly installments.

Sisterhood Brunch

Description

Sisterhood Brunch invites women and those who identify with femininity to join an intergenerational discourse among students, faculty, staff, and community members. Enjoy brunch and discuss topics relevant to your intersecting identities. These events are hosted by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion each semester.

Ski & Ride

Description

Ski and Ride is an inclusive, community-building club for students interested in winter outdoor recreation. Our goal is to form a community in which people can learn to ski and ride in a safe and welcoming environment! Meet friends and form lasting memories with other Champlain students. We host events like general meetings, movie premieres, and shop nights. When the cold months bring snow, the club will transition to in-person, on-hill events, such as community ski days, learn-to-ski events, and our annual Rail Jam.

Stiller Women in Business

Description

Stiller Women in Business is a group of students who are committed to giving women and other marginalized communities within the business world a safe space to hang out and talk about classes and other activities on campus. You do not have to be female identifying or a business major to participate in the club. Our goal is to explore, transform, and ignite the business world, and this starts with us. Through the combined efforts of its members and leaders in the business community, SWIB strengthens their professional expertise to positively impact their careers and society.

Student Activity Programmers

Description

Student Activity Programmers (SAP) host multiple events each week to encourage social interactions and bonding within our community. These events are open to all students and are almost always free to participate in. Some program highlights include bingo, trivia, and free bowling nights, as well as crafts, movie nights, or themed food nights. If there is a fun event you want to see on campus, let us know and we can make it happen!

Student Ambassador

Description

Student Ambassadors are the brand ambassadors and public faces of Champlain College. Student Ambassadors represent a variety of years and majors that strive to share their passion for Champlain with visitors to the College. Student Ambassadors give tours of Champlain’s campus and assist with various admissions events such as receptions, open houses, and even high school bus trips and student panels. Your to-do list will also include assisting in direct mailing projects, prospective student outreach, and operational tasks. You’ll be responsible for showcasing the amazing community, resources, and opportunities offered at Champlain.

To apply to the Student Ambassador team, you must have completed at least one semester at Champlain and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students can apply via Handshake. Hiring typically occurs at the end of a semester for the following academic year. For more information, contact the Admissions Team at admission@champlain.edu.

Student Government Association (SGA)

Description

The Student Government Association (SGA) offers opportunities for leadership development, involvement, and personal growth within Champlain College. Whether you’re looking to start a club, an on-campus initiative, or become a member, SGA is here for you! Located off of Fireside Lounge, the Hearthstone (SGA hub) is available for any and all students looking for a place to study, hang out, or have questions answered about the SGA from our Representatives.

Each member of SGA is available during office hours– located on the SGA website. The SGA also holds House of Representatives meetings every Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM in CCM 424. These meetings are open to any student, faculty, or staff who would like to attend. If you can’t join us but are still interested in knowing what happens at these meetings, you can view the monthly minutes on the Archives page.

If you are interested in starting a club of your own, it requires one Club Head, nine interested current Champlain students, and one faculty advisor. In addition, all club activities must align with the College’s Student Code of Conduct.

Students Demand Action

Description

Students Demand Action is a network within Everytown for Gun Safety that reaches out to passionate students and channels their energy into the fight against gun violence. Our generation has grown up in gun violence that has worsened even through the COVID-19 pandemic. We should not fear for our lives at school, sporting events, or concerts. Gun violence needs to end, which is why we are going to educate and prepare students and registered voters and work together to advocate for safer schools, homes, and cities.

Syndicate for Appreciating and Watching Horror

Description

Our club is driven by a collective curiosity to explore the intricate artistry that makes horror movies so irresistibly captivating. Geared toward those with a penchant for the mysterious, the horrifying, and the thrilling, our aim is to dissect the essence of exceptional horror. While this will mainly be done through weekly screenings (with free snacks provided) that cover a diverse range of films from chilling classics to modern gems, our hope is to ignite a discussion following our screenings that transcends the screen to include other forms of horror media.

Tabletop Games Club

Description

The Tabletop Games Club is a place for people to socialize and play tabletop games. We provide a large variety of games members can freely use. Whether you’re new to board games or a veteran, all are welcome! Don’t know what to play? Find a club head and we’ll help you get set up with a game. Our club is all about coming together and meeting new people with shared interests, and we’d love to have you there!

The Champlayers

Description

The Champlayers are a completely student-run theater club that produces a show each semester. We are an audition-based club, but we also have positions in tech and encourage students to join our discord to keep informed about what opportunities we have open! We meet twice a week until tech week and hold auditions early in the semester. We do not perform musicals.

The Crossover

Description

Written by students, for students.

The Crossover is a digital publication serving as the “Intersection of News, Arts, and Culture at Champlain College.” It provides an honest and independent view of Champlain’s campus and culture through an authentic and informative perspective by researching relevant issues and events while following open and transparent reporting practices.

Four main categories allow for a diverse platform of featured stories:

• News pieces include relevant happenings around campus—and sometimes at the national level—that provide critical information to the Champlain community.
• Feature pieces are human-interest stories with in-depth research and careful planning.
• Opinion pieces delve into the unique views of the students writing them.
• Culture pieces showcase the social atmosphere on campus, as well as the city of Burlington, including reviews and advice columns.

The Crossover’s staff is made up of writers, section editors, copy editors, photographers, artists, a social media manager, and an editor-in-chief. If you want to join our team, or contribute a story, email champlaincrossover@gmail.com with your pitch or completed draft for feedback!
