“The release of ChatGPT in November 2022 marked one of the most profound technological advances I’ve seen in my 25 years in higher education,” starts Montagnino. “Every day we watch its unprecedented impact in real-time and examine its future potential.”
She goes on to explain the evolving mindsets in higher education regarding artificial intelligence (AI), and how Champlain College Online is responding and adapting to the new landscape.
“In the classroom, AI can assist with personalized learning, real-time feedback, and help with administrative tasks. However, it can’t replace the human element of teaching – building individual relationships, inspiring students, and serving as a mentor,” she writes.
Over the last nine months, Montagnino has worked with her team to “develop ways to create engaging student experiences in curricula that bring together technology’s fast-paced, deeply accessible knowledge base, and the human element of teaching.”
Educators and administrators alike can tap into the “best of both worlds” of authentic learning in the AI era by following the six pieces of advice she lists in Fierce Education.
